Attended a two-day training at grange road. and.....it was behind orchard road....if only it were longer. The lecturer was well, old (haha) at 60, but nonetheless very kind and didn't have any temper at all. So he made us all feel guilty about being "bad" (good tactic to manage a class). I have to note everything he said in point form down for my records as it was great stuff! and we ALL had fun! mostly laughing at funny stories we composed and the ones he told us.
He mentioned at the very start
1) Don't listen to discouragement and discouraging people
2) LISTEN to encouraging words.
3) Teaching is a great profession
4) Stay focussed on teaching...(because it's a great profession like doctors)
5) Never regret joining this profession (because shopkeepers give u discounts if u tell them u're a teacher)
6) Avoid scolding and punishing kids/teens. Use niceness etc instead. they will love you for that.
7) Treat them well (the kids).
8) Be their friend and mentor but have rules
9) Be firm yet affirming.
10) Be seriously funny. Or tell funny stories but try not to be Clown-funny.
11) Use group work for them to help each other
12) Use objects, visuals
13) use Games and hands-on activities
14) Pair and group work rulez!
15) solve problems calmly and try to cut unecessary discussions by saying "That's not important"
16) Tap them on the shoulder or stand near them when they are not listening or talking.
17) Challenge the talkative ones to be leaders / role models.
18) Personally sing happy birthday to those with birthdays that week/month.
